Have you heard of the condition commonly called “Face Blindness”?

Face blindness
SHELTIELUVER wonders:

I guess it’s where you can’t tell people’s faces apart and you don’t even recognize very popular celebrities and even friends and relatives. It affects all ages and is usually caused by head trauma from what I’ve read. I saw a special on t.v. once on it and was wondering if it was Dateline or 60 Minutes or something of that nature? Do you know someone with this condition?

I had a teacher with this. We had to wear nametags and have name placards on our desk all year. She said she was lucky though, because her’s was less severe than some people. She knew women not able to recognize their own children at the playground.

I’ve never heard it called this, and don’t know where you saw it, but I’ve heard of the phenomenon.

I’ve read some books by neurophysiologists — brain guys — and it can be head trauma, or a tumor.

There’s circuitry in the brain specifically for recognizing faces.

There’s actually a broad range of this ability — so not all of it has to do with brain damage, but severe cases, I gather, usually do.

There’s a couple tests on the web to see if you’ve got it (I did better than I thought I would, as I’ve never been good at remembering face — or names, for that matter).

The brain is a fascinating thing. I wouldn’t have thought there’s be a specific area just for this, but there is.
